Abstract

Losing a parent is a traumatic experience that has a significant impact on mental health, often leading to prolonged grief disorder (PGD) that disrupts daily activities. Previous research has primarily assessed grief quantitatively, while studies on the self-healing process, particularly within cultural and spiritual contexts such as Buddhist teachings on anicca and karma, are still rare. This qualitative study aims to: (1) analyze the psychological and spiritual dynamics of individuals facing loss, (2) identify the self-healing mechanisms employed, and (3) explore the role of religious practices in adaptation. It is hoped that the results of this study can contribute to the development of a more holistic grief counseling approach by integrating psychological and spiritual aspects. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with an interpretive phenomenology (IPA) method to explore the grief experience and healing process of individuals who have lost a parent. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and documentation review. Five informants aged at least 21 years, who were Buddhist and had experienced the loss of a parent, participated in the study. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, narrative presentation, and verification, with the application of grounded theory to identify key themes. Data validity was ensured through member checking, source triangulation, and discussions with colleagues. The study took place over five months in the informants' natural environments, such as their homes and the Pubba Maṅgala ārāma Temple, focusing on the subjects' experiences within the context of Buddhist spirituality. The results showed that informants' emotional responses varied, influenced by proximity to the deceased, cause of death, and cultural context. Buddhist teachings, particularly the concept of anicca and the ritual of dedicating merit, contributed to the acceptance process. Family support and productive activities served as coping strategies. Recovery was accelerated by emotional and financial independence, although grief remained considered normal. The study also found that loss can strengthen family bonds, foster personal growth, and reinforce values inherited from parents. These findings provide insight into the complexity of the grieving process and the factors that support recovery in specific cultural contexts.
