Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of mindfulness and storytelling on character development among students at Buddhist Sunday School (SMB) in Padang City. The research is based on the importance of Buddhist-based educational strategies in shaping the moral, spiritual, and social character of adolescents. A quantitative approach was used, employing both simple and multiple regression analysis, with 63 student respondents from SMB Buddha Warman. Mindfulness was measured through attention focus, present-moment awareness, and non-judgmental acceptance. Storytelling was assessed based on narrative clarity, alignment with Buddhist values, student engagement, and its ability to encourage positive behavior. Character development was evaluated through the dimensions of morality (sīla), mental cultivation (bhāvanā), loving-kindness (mettā), and faith (saddhā-carita). The results showed that mindfulness had a positive and significant effect on character development, contributing 65.7%, while storytelling contributed 73.1%. Together, both variables accounted for 74.9%, with the remaining influence coming from other factors such as family, teachers, and the social environment. These findings highlight the effectiveness of integrating mindfulness and storytelling in strengthening students’ character. The study also emphasizes the relevance of Buddhist teachings, such as the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta on full awareness, Dhamma storytelling through Jātaka tales, and the Noble Eightfold Path—particularly right mindfulness (sammā-sati) and right speech (sammā-vācā)—as a foundation for character education in Buddhist learning environments. Practically, this research serves as a guide for Sunday school teachers to integrate these methods in nurturing morally grounded, compassionate, and competitive young Buddhists. Keywords: character strengthening, mindfulness, storytelling.
